What is Forex Trading?

Forex (foreign exchange, or FX) is the market where currencies are traded against each other. It is the largest financial market in the world and runs 24 hours a day from Monday to Friday, passing from the Sydney and Tokyo sessions to London and then New York.

Currencies are always quoted in pairs. In EURUSD the euro is the base currency and the US dollar the quote currency, so a price of 1.0850 means one euro costs 1.0850 dollars. Buying the pair is a bet that the euro will strengthen against the dollar; selling it is the opposite.

Most retail forex is traded through brokers that offer leverage. Leverage lets a small deposit control a much larger position, which magnifies losses exactly as much as gains — the main reason most beginners lose money in forex.

Key points

• Pip: the standard unit of price movement — 0.0001 for most pairs, 0.01 for JPY pairs.
• Lot: position size. A standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency; mini is 10,000, micro is 1,000.
• Spread: the gap between buy and sell price — the broker's main cost to you.
• Major pairs (EURUSD, GBPUSD, USDJPY, USDCHF, AUDUSD, USDCAD, NZDUSD) have the tightest spreads.
• The London–New York overlap is usually the most active, most liquid part of the day.
• Check that your broker is licensed by a recognised regulator, and the rules for residents of your own country, before you deposit.

Forex (Foreign Exchange) කියන්නේ රටවල් වල මුදල් (currencies) එකිනෙකට එරෙහිව මිලදී ගන්න සහ විකුණන වෙළඳපොළ. මේක ලෝකයේ විශාලතම මූල්‍ය වෙළඳපොළ වන අතර සඳුදා සිට සිකුරාදා දක්වා පැය 24 පුරාම විවෘතයි.

Currencies හැමවිටම යුගල (pairs) විදියට තමයි trade කරන්නේ. උදාහරණයක් විදියට EURUSD 1.0850 කියන්නේ යුරෝ එකක් ඩොලර් 1.0850 ක් කියන එක. Euro එක ශක්තිමත් වෙයි කියලා හිතනවා නම් buy කරනවා, දුර්වල වෙයි කියලා හිතනවා නම් sell කරනවා.

Brokers ලා දෙන leverage නිසා පොඩි මුදලකින් ලොකු position එකක් open කරන්න පුළුවන්. ඒත් leverage එකෙන් ලාභය වගේම පාඩුවත් එකසේ විශාල වෙනවා. ආරම්භකයින් ගොඩක් දෙනෙක් මුදල් නැති කරගන්න ප්‍රධානම හේතුව මේකයි.

• Pip — මිල වෙනස් වීමේ මූලික ඒකකය (බොහෝ pairs වල 0.0001, JPY pairs වල 0.01).
• Lot — position එකේ ප්‍රමාණය. Standard lot = units 100,000, mini = 10,000, micro = 1,000.
• Spread — buy මිල සහ sell මිල අතර වෙනස; broker ට ඔබ ගෙවන ප්‍රධාන වියදම.
• ලංකාවේ ඉඳන් trade කරනවා නම්, broker එක පිළිගත් regulator කෙනෙක් යටතේ license ලබා ඇත්දැයි සහ ශ්‍රී ලංකා මහ බැංකුවේ (CBSL) නීති මොනවාදැයි මුලින්ම පරීක්ෂා කරන්න.
