Halal or haram
Is an Islamic swap-free forex account halal?
Last reviewed:
Short answer
An Islamic or swap-free account removes the overnight interest (swap) that brokers normally charge or pay on positions held past the daily rollover. It does not change the other features scholars object to: leverage provided as a loan, no actual delivery of currency (spot possession), and contracts settled only on price differences. For that reason most Pakistani scholars, including Banuri Town's fatwa on online forex, still consider such trading impermissible.
What changes and what does not
| Feature | Standard account | Islamic / swap-free account |
|---|---|---|
| Overnight swap (interest) | Charged or paid daily | Removed |
| Leverage | Yes | Yes — still a loan from the broker |
| Delivery of currency | None (CFD) | None (CFD) |
| Admin or holding fee | No | Often added after a few days |
| Wider spreads on some pairs | No | Sometimes |
The scholarly objections that remain
- Bay' al-sarf requires both currencies to be exchanged in the same sitting; online CFDs never deliver currency.
- Leverage is a loan from the broker tied to the trade; a loan that benefits the lender is treated as riba.
- Short-term leveraged speculation resembles gambling (maysir) and involves excessive uncertainty (gharar).
- Brokers can close positions unilaterally (stop-out), which classical sale rules do not allow.
Hidden costs to look for
- Fixed "administration" or "carrying" fees after a set number of nights — interest under another name, critics argue.
- Wider spreads or higher commissions to compensate the broker.
- Limits on which pairs or how long positions may be held swap-free.
- Conditions that let the broker convert you back to a standard account.
The minority view
Some scholars and many brokers argue that removing interest addresses the main prohibition and that modern electronic settlement can count as constructive possession. People who follow this view usually still avoid high leverage and very short-term speculation. Because the question is disputed, take the broker's exact account terms to a qualified mufti.
Legal reminder for Pakistan
An Islamic label does not change regulation: offshore forex brokers are not licensed by the SBP or SECP, and funding them can breach State Bank rules. Shariah-compliant alternatives inside Pakistan include KMI-screened PSX shares, Islamic mutual funds and spot purchases of gold with immediate delivery.
Questions to ask before accepting any "Islamic" trading product
- Do I actually receive and own the currency, gold or asset, or only a price difference?
- Is any part of my position funded by the provider, and on what terms?
- Are there fees that replace the swap, and how are they calculated?
- Who is the regulator, and can I complain to anyone in Pakistan?
- Which scholar or Shariah board certified the product, and can I read the ruling?
Roman Urdu mein jawab
Kya Islamic swap-free forex account halal hai?
Islamic ya swap-free account raat bhar ka sood (swap) khatam karta hai, lekin leverage (broker ka qarz), currency ka qabza na hona aur sirf qeemat ke farq par sauda — yeh baqi rehte hain. Is liye Banuri Town samet Pakistan ke aksar ulama ise ab bhi na-jaiz kehte hain. Account ki sharait kisi mufti ko dikhayein.
Frequently asked questions
Does Exness or XM have an Islamic account?
Many offshore brokers offer swap-free accounts. The label removes overnight swap but not the leverage and delivery issues scholars raise, and these brokers are not regulated in Pakistan.
Is swap the same as interest?
Yes. A swap is the interest-rate difference between two currencies charged or paid when a position is held overnight.
Is gold trading in an Islamic account halal?
Gold must be exchanged hand to hand under Islamic rules. XAUUSD CFDs in any account deliver no gold, so most scholars object.
What is a halal alternative to forex trading?
Shariah-screened PSX shares, Islamic mutual funds, sukuk and spot gold purchases are widely accepted alternatives.
