How is the dollar rate in Pakistan decided?

Last reviewed:

Short answer

Pakistan has a market-based exchange rate: banks trade dollars with each other in the interbank market, and that rate moves with the supply of dollars (exports, remittances, IMF and other inflows) and demand (imports and debt payments). Exchange companies set the open-market rate for cash, which normally sits slightly above interbank — in mid-October 2026 the gap was well under 1%, with interbank around Rs 277 per dollar.

What pushes the rupee up or down

  • Remittances from overseas Pakistanis — one of the largest sources of dollars.
  • The trade balance: oil, food and machinery imports raise dollar demand; textile and other exports bring dollars in.
  • Foreign debt repayments and IMF programme disbursements.
  • The State Bank's interest-rate policy: higher rates make rupee assets more attractive.
  • Confidence and politics: uncertainty drives people to buy dollars as protection.

Why interbank and open market can diverge

When dollars are scarce, cash demand jumps and exchange companies raise prices faster than the interbank market moves. Under Pakistan's IMF programme, a gap of about 1% or less is treated as healthy; wider gaps signal stress and usually bring State Bank action against speculation. A large gap is also a red flag for anyone offering "cheap dollars" — illegal hawala and hundi deals often exploit it.

What it means for traders and investors

  • Gold in rupees rises when the rupee weakens, even if world gold is flat.
  • Exporters' shares (textiles, IT) often benefit from a weaker rupee; import-heavy sectors suffer.
  • Foreign investors in PSX lose in dollar terms when the rupee falls, so currency stress can trigger selling.
  • USD/PKR on offshore broker platforms is an exotic pair with wide spreads, and speculating on it there is not regulated in Pakistan.

Roman Urdu mein jawab

Pakistan mein dollar rate kaise tay hota hai?

Pakistan mein exchange rate market-based hai: banks interbank market mein dollar ka len-den karte hain, aur rate dollars ki supply (exports, remittances, IMF) aur demand (imports, qarzon ki adaigi) se badalta hai. Exchange companies cash ka open market rate rakhti hain jo aam tor par interbank se thora upar hota hai — October 2026 mein yeh farq 1% se kam tha.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I check the official dollar rate?

The State Bank of Pakistan publishes its weighted-average and mark-to-market rates daily, and the Exchange Companies Association quotes open-market rates.

Is it legal to buy dollars and keep them at home?

Individuals may buy foreign currency from licensed exchange companies within SBP limits and documentation rules, usually with a CNIC and a stated purpose. Using unlicensed dealers or hawala is illegal.

Will the dollar go up or down?

Nobody can forecast it reliably. It depends on reserves, the IMF programme, oil prices and remittances. Be wary of anyone who claims certainty.

Why is the USDT rate higher than the dollar rate?

P2P sellers charge a premium for convenience and risk, and demand rises when dollars are hard to get through banks.
