What is Options Trading?

An option is a contract giving the right, but not the obligation, to buy (a call) or sell (a put) an asset at a set price — the strike — before or at a set date. The buyer pays a premium for that right; the seller collects it and takes on the obligation.

An option's price depends on where the underlying is relative to the strike, the time left to expiry and implied volatility. The Greeks measure those sensitivities: delta (to price), theta (to time decay), vega (to volatility) and gamma (how fast delta changes).

Buying options limits the loss to the premium paid, but most short-dated options expire worthless. Selling options earns that decay, but some short positions carry losses far larger than the premium received.

Key points

  • Call = right to buy; put = right to sell.
  • Time decay (theta) accelerates in the final weeks before expiry.
  • Implied volatility often collapses after earnings — the 'IV crush'.
  • Spreads (buying one option and selling another) cap both risk and reward.

Options trading

Options Trading — frequently asked questions

Are options riskier than stocks?

Bought options can lose 100% of the premium quickly, even if the stock barely moves, because of time decay. Some sold options carry very large or unlimited risk. Defined-risk structures such as spreads keep losses capped.

What does 0DTE mean?

Zero days to expiry — options that expire the same day they are traded, most commonly on the S&P 500 index. They react extremely fast to price moves and carry very high risk.

Options
