What is rupee-cost averaging or a monthly investment plan (SIP)?

Last reviewed:

Short answer

Rupee-cost averaging means investing the same amount at regular intervals — for example Rs 10,000 on the 5th of every month — regardless of price. You automatically buy more units when prices are low and fewer when high, which averages out your cost and removes the temptation to time the market. In Pakistan, most mutual fund companies offer this as a systematic investment plan (SIP).

A worked example

The simple average of the four prices is Rs 101.25, but because more units were bought when prices were low, the average cost per unit is about Rs 98.8.

MonthAmount investedUnit priceUnits bought
1Rs 10,000Rs 100100
2Rs 10,000Rs 80125
3Rs 10,000Rs 12580
4Rs 10,000Rs 100100
TotalRs 40,000Average price paid ≈ Rs 98.8405 units

Why it works for most people

  • Removes the need to predict market tops and bottoms, which even professionals rarely do well.
  • Turns saving into a habit, like a monthly bill.
  • Reduces regret: falling prices become a chance to buy more, not a reason to panic.
  • Fits salaried incomes — start small and increase with raises.

Limits to be honest about

  • It is no promise of profit and cannot prevent losses in a long decline.
  • A lump sum invested early often ends higher in a steadily rising market.
  • Costs matter: front-end loads or minimum commissions on small share purchases eat returns.
  • It works only if you keep going through bad months.

Setting one up in Pakistan

  1. Choose an SECP-licensed asset manager and a fund that matches your goal (equity, Islamic equity, income).
  2. Open an account online with your CNIC and bank details.
  3. Set a monthly debit instruction or standing order from your bank.
  4. For direct shares, buy a fixed amount of an ETF or a few chosen shares each month through your broker.
  5. Review once a year; increase the amount when your income rises.

Pair it with the right expectations

Equity investments in Pakistan have produced strong returns in some years and painful drawdowns in others. A monthly plan works best for goals at least five years away — children's education, a house deposit, retirement — and alongside an emergency fund, so you never have to sell during a slump.

Roman Urdu mein jawab

SIP ya rupee cost averaging kya hai?

Rupee cost averaging matlab har mahine ek hi raqam — jaise Rs 10,000 — qeemat dekhe baghair invest karna. Qeemat kam ho to zyada units, zyada ho to kam units milte hain, jis se ausat qeemat behtar hoti hai aur market ka waqt pakarne ki koshish khatam hoti hai. Pakistan mein mutual fund companies ise SIP ke naam se deti hain.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum SIP amount in Pakistan?

Many fund companies accept monthly plans of a few thousand rupees. Check the specific fund's minimums.

Is a lump sum better than monthly investing?

If markets rise steadily, a lump sum often wins. Monthly investing reduces timing risk and suits salaried savers who earn monthly.

Can I do rupee-cost averaging with PSX shares?

Yes, but minimum commissions make very small share purchases expensive; ETFs or funds are usually more efficient for small amounts.

Is a monthly investment plan halal?

The method is neutral. Choose Shariah-compliant funds or shares if that matters to you.
