What is Trading Psychology?

Trading psychology is about the decisions you make under uncertainty, with money on the line. Most traders know their rules; the hard part is following them after three losses in a row, or when a market is running without them.

The common failures have names: FOMO (chasing a move you missed), revenge trading (trading bigger to win back a loss), overtrading (taking setups that are not in your plan) and moving a stop loss to avoid taking a loss.

A written trading plan and a trading journal turn feelings into data. Reviewing your own trades shows which setups actually pay, and which mistakes keep costing money.

Key points

  • Write the plan before the market opens; execute it during the session.
  • Log every trade: setup, reason, screenshot, result and how you felt.
  • Stop for the day after a set number of losses.
  • Judge yourself on following the process, not on any single result.

Trading psychology

Trading Psychology — frequently asked questions

How do I stop revenge trading?

Set a hard daily loss limit and a maximum number of trades, and walk away when either is hit. Revenge trading happens in the minutes after a loss, so a rule that takes you out of the market for those minutes removes the opportunity.

What should a trading journal include?

The instrument, setup, entry, stop, target, position size, result, a chart screenshot, and a line on your state of mind. Review it weekly to find the setups and habits that make or lose you money.
