Trading basics
What is day trading, and can you day trade on the Pakistan Stock Exchange?
Last reviewed:
Short answer
Day trading means buying and selling within the same trading day, closing every position before the market shuts so nothing is held overnight. On the Pakistan Stock Exchange you can day trade shares through any broker — intraday trades settle as a net position — but commissions, taxes and the spread make it hard to profit, and studies of retail day traders show that most lose money over time.
Day trading vs swing trading vs scalping
| Style | Holding time | Trades per day | What matters most |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scalping | Seconds to minutes | Dozens | Very low costs and fast execution |
| Day trading | Minutes to hours, closed same day | A few | Intraday levels, volume and discipline |
| Swing trading | Days to weeks | A few per week | Trend and daily-chart structure |
| Investing | Months to years | Rarely | Business quality and valuation |
Day trading on PSX
- Trading hours: PSX's regular session runs on weekdays during Pakistan business hours, with a shorter session and a prayer break on Friday — check the exchange for current timings.
- Settlement: trades settle T+1 since 9 February 2026; a share bought and sold the same day is settled as a net result.
- Liquidity: stick to actively traded shares (large banks, energy, cement, fertiliser) — illiquid stocks have wide spreads and are favourites of pump-and-dump groups.
- Circuit breakers: individual shares have daily price limits, and the market can halt on large index moves.
- Costs: brokerage commission on both legs, CDC/NCCPL fees, and capital gains tax on net gains add up quickly when you trade often.
The odds
A study of everyone who began day trading Brazil's equity index futures between 2013 and 2015 and kept going for at least 300 days found that about 97% lost money and only about 0.4% earned more than a bank teller's pay. Similar results come from Taiwan's stock market. Day trading is a competitive activity against professionals with better tools and lower costs; most beginners do better learning on paper first.
A basic day-trading routine
- Before the open, mark yesterday's high and low and key support and resistance levels.
- Write a plan for each trade: entry, stop-loss and target, sized so the stop costs 1% of the account or less.
- Trade only the first hours when volume is highest; avoid the noisy minutes around announcements.
- Stop for the day after a set number of losses.
- Keep a journal with screenshots and review it weekly.
Is day trading halal?
For shares of Shariah-compliant companies, many scholars allow buying and selling on the same day, since you become the owner once the trade is executed. Others advise against pure intraday speculation, where shares are never really held, because it drifts toward gambling. Day trading with borrowed money (margin financing), short selling, or on leveraged forex and crypto futures is widely considered impermissible.
Roman Urdu mein jawab
Day trading kya hai?
Day trading mein aap ek hi din ke andar khareedte aur bechte hain, raat ko koi position nahi rakhte. PSX par kisi bhi broker ke zariye day trading ho sakti hai, lekin commission, tax aur spread ki wajah se nafa mushkil hai — research ke mutabiq zyada tar day traders waqt ke saath nuqsan karte hain. Margin ya leverage ke saath day trading ko ulama na-jaiz kehte hain.
Frequently asked questions
How much money do I need to start day trading in Pakistan?
There is no legal minimum on PSX, but small accounts are eaten by minimum commissions. Many traders practise on a simulator before risking real money.
Can I day trade crypto in Pakistan?
Spot crypto can be traded at any hour on exchanges. Day trading with leverage on futures adds liquidation risk and is widely considered impermissible by scholars.
What is the best time to day trade on PSX?
The first hour after the open usually has the most volume and the clearest moves. Liquidity thins in the middle of the session.
Is day trading better than long-term investing?
For most people, no. Costs and taxes compound against frequent traders, while long-term investors in good companies pay them rarely.
