What is the difference between swing trading and scalping?

Last reviewed:

Short answer

Swing trading means holding positions for several days to a few weeks to catch one price "swing" in a trend, using daily or 4-hour charts. Scalping means taking many very small, very short trades — seconds to minutes — on 1- or 5-minute charts. Swing trading needs less screen time and is less hurt by costs; scalping demands constant attention and very low spreads and commissions.

Why costs decide scalping

If a scalper aims for 5 pips and pays a 1-pip spread plus commission, a fifth or more of every winning trade goes to costs before any losers. On PSX, minimum brokerage commissions and fees on both legs make scalping individual shares very hard. Swing traders aim for moves many times larger than their costs, so the same fees barely matter.

A simple swing-trading process

  1. Find the trend on the weekly and daily chart — higher highs and higher lows for an uptrend.
  2. Wait for a pullback to a support level or moving average instead of chasing.
  3. Enter when price shows rejection at that level, for example a bullish engulfing candle.
  4. Place the stop-loss below the pullback low and size the position to risk 1% of the account.
  5. Take profit near the previous high or trail the stop as the trend continues.

What scalpers need

  • A liquid market with tight spreads (major forex pairs, index futures, top crypto pairs).
  • Fast, reliable execution and internet — load-shedding or a slow connection is a real cost in Pakistan.
  • Strict rules for maximum loss per day, because many small losses add up fast.
  • Emotional control: dozens of decisions an hour lead to fatigue and revenge trading.

Which style for a beginner in Pakistan?

For most people with a job or studies, swing trading or longer-term investing on PSX is more realistic: decisions can be made in the evening, costs are a small share of each trade, and there is time to think. Remember that the Shariah objections to leverage apply to every style when it is used with borrowed money.

Roman Urdu mein jawab

Swing trading aur scalping mein kya farq hai?

Swing trading mein position kuch din se kuch hafton tak rakhi jati hai, daily ya 4-hour chart par. Scalping mein bohat chhote aur tez trades hote hain — seconds se minutes — 1 ya 5 minute chart par. Swing trading mein screen time kam aur cost ka asar kam hai; scalping mein musalsal tawajjo aur bohat kam spread chahiye. Job karne walon ke liye swing trading zyada munasib hai.

Frequently asked questions

Is scalping profitable?

A few professionals with very low costs profit from it, but studies of retail short-term traders show most lose money. Costs and speed are the main obstacles.

Can I swing trade PSX shares?

Yes. Swing trading liquid PSX shares on daily charts is common, and holding for days avoids the overnight leverage costs found in forex.

Is swing trading halal?

Swing trading Shariah-compliant shares with your own money is widely considered permissible. Swing trading with leveraged CFDs or futures raises the usual objections to leverage and interest.

How much time does swing trading take?

Many swing traders review charts once a day for 30–60 minutes and set orders in advance, which fits around a job.
