How do I set a stop-loss and decide how much to buy?

Last reviewed:

Short answer

Decide first how much of your account you are willing to lose on one trade — many traders use 1%. Place the stop-loss where your trade idea is proven wrong, not at a random distance. Then divide the rupees you are willing to lose by the distance from entry to stop to get the position size. This keeps every loss small and survivable, whatever the market does.

The position-size formula

Position size = (account size × risk %) ÷ (entry price − stop-loss price). The result is the number of shares or units to buy so that, if the stop is hit, you lose exactly the amount you planned.

Worked examples (illustrative prices)

Note that position size comes from the stop distance, not from how confident you feel. A wider stop means a smaller position.

PSX shareGold futures (per tola)
AccountRs 500,000Rs 1,000,000
Risk per trade (1%)Rs 5,000Rs 10,000
EntryRs 250Rs 400,000
Stop-lossRs 240 (below support)Rs 396,000
Risk per unitRs 10Rs 4,000
Position size500 shares (Rs 125,000)2.5 tola → round down to 2
Loss if stoppedRs 5,000Rs 8,000

Where to put the stop-loss

  • Beyond the level that proves you wrong: below support for a long trade, above resistance for a short.
  • Outside normal noise — some traders add a multiple of the average daily range (ATR) beyond the level.
  • Not at the exact obvious price where everyone else's stops sit.
  • Never move a stop further away once the trade is open; moving it closer to lock in profit is fine.

Risk-reward and win rate

If you risk Rs 5,000 to make Rs 10,000 (1:2), you can be right only 40% of the time and still profit: 4 wins × 10,000 − 6 losses × 5,000 = Rs 10,000 on ten trades, before costs. Low risk-reward trades need very high win rates, which few traders achieve.

Risk : rewardBreak-even win rate
1 : 150%
1 : 233%
1 : 325%

Why 1% matters

Losing streaks happen to everyone. At 1% risk, ten losses in a row leave about 90% of the account. At 10% risk, the same streak leaves about 35% — and you then need almost a 190% gain just to get back to where you started.

Roman Urdu mein jawab

Stop-loss aur position size kaise tay karein?

Pehle tay karein ek trade par account ka kitna nuqsan bardasht hai — aksar 1%. Stop-loss wahan lagayein jahan aap ka idea ghalat sabit ho. Phir nuqsan ki raqam ko entry aur stop ke farq se taqseem karein — yeh aap ka position size hai. Masalan Rs 5 lakh account, 1% = Rs 5,000, entry 250, stop 240 = 500 shares.

Frequently asked questions

Should I always use a stop-loss?

For trading, yes — it defines your maximum loss before you enter. Long-term investors in shares may instead limit risk through diversification and position size.

What is a trailing stop?

A stop that moves in your favour as price moves, for example staying below each new swing low, to lock in profit while letting a trend run.

Can a stop-loss fail?

On a gap — for example at the PSX open after big news or a weekend move in forex — price can jump past your stop and fill worse than planned.

Is 2% risk per trade too much?

Many experienced traders use 0.5%–2%. Beginners are usually advised to stay at 1% or lower until they have a tested record.
