Pakistan Stock Exchange

What is the P/E ratio and how do I use it for PSX stocks?

Last reviewed:

Short answer

The price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is a share's price divided by its earnings per share (EPS). A P/E of 6 means investors pay Rs 6 for every rupee of annual profit. It is the most common quick measure of whether a share looks cheap or expensive. In 2026 the KSE-100 traded around 7 times forward earnings, roughly half the regional average, reflecting both value and Pakistan's higher risk.

How to calculate it

P/E = share price ÷ earnings per share. If a company earned Rs 2 billion last year and has 100 million shares, EPS is Rs 20. At a share price of Rs 160, the P/E is 8. The inverse — earnings yield — is 1 ÷ 8 = 12.5%, a handy way to compare a share with interest rates or other investments.

Trailing vs forward P/E

Pakistan's market in context

Broker reports in 2026 put the KSE-100 at about 6.8 times forward earnings against a regional average near 12.6 times, a discount of roughly 46%, and below its own 10-year average of about 8 times. The dividend yield was also well above regional peers. The discount reflects real risks — currency depreciation, political and external-account stress, and limited foreign participation — so a low P/E is not automatically a bargain.

P/E traps

  • Cyclical peaks: cement or steel companies can look cheap at peak profits, just before earnings fall.
  • One-off gains: a property sale or tax refund inflates EPS for one year.
  • Declining businesses: a low P/E can be justified if profits are shrinking.
  • Comparing across sectors: banks, tech and utilities naturally trade at different multiples.
  • Losses: P/E is meaningless when earnings are negative.

Using P/E well

  1. Compare a share with its own history and with peers in the same sector.
  2. Check earnings quality: cash flow should broadly support reported profits.
  3. Look at growth: a higher P/E can be fair for a company growing earnings faster.
  4. Combine with other measures: price-to-book for banks, dividend yield, and debt levels.
  5. For Islamic investors, confirm the company passes Shariah screening before valuing it.

Roman Urdu mein jawab

P/E ratio kya hai?

P/E share ki qeemat ko earnings per share (EPS) se taqseem karne se banta hai. P/E 6 ka matlab har saal ke ek rupay munafe ke liye Rs 6 dena. 2026 mein KSE-100 taqreeban 7 guna forward earnings par tha, regional average ka taqreeban aadha — jo sasta hone ke saath Pakistan ka zyada risk bhi dikhata hai.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good P/E ratio?

There is no single good number. It depends on the sector, growth and risk; compare with peers and the company's own history.

Where can I find P/E for PSX shares?

The PSX data portal, broker research and financial websites show EPS and P/E; you can also calculate it from the company's latest results.

Why are Pakistani stocks so cheap?

Investors demand a discount for currency, political and macroeconomic risk, and foreign ownership is limited. Analysts debate how much of the discount is justified.

What is EPS?

Earnings per share: net profit attributable to shareholders divided by the number of shares outstanding.
