What is the KSE-100 index?

Last reviewed:

Short answer

The KSE-100 is the main benchmark index of the Pakistan Stock Exchange. It tracks 100 listed companies weighted by free-float market capitalisation: the largest company from each sector, plus the remaining largest companies overall. When news says "the market rose 1,000 points", it means the KSE-100. It covers most of the exchange's tradable value, so it is the standard measure of how Pakistani shares are doing.

How the 100 companies are chosen

  1. PSX groups listed companies into sectors (banks, oil and gas exploration, cement, fertiliser, power, technology and others; open-end mutual funds are excluded).
  2. The company with the largest free-float market capitalisation in each sector is included, so every major sector is represented.
  3. The remaining places are filled by the largest companies by free-float market capitalisation, regardless of sector.
  4. The index is recomposed periodically, so companies can enter or leave as their size and liquidity change.

What "free float" means

Free float is the part of a company's shares that is actually available to trade. Shares held by sponsors, directors, the government and other locked-in holders are excluded. PSX moved the KSE-100 to free-float weighting in October 2012. The effect: a company that is mostly government-owned counts for less in the index than its total size would suggest.

What moves the KSE-100

  • State Bank interest-rate decisions — rate cuts usually lift shares because bank deposits and T-bills become less attractive.
  • IMF programme reviews, the budget and political stability.
  • Heavyweight sectors: banks, oil and gas exploration companies, fertiliser and cement carry much of the index's weight.
  • Foreign investor flows and global oil prices.

Recent milestones

The KSE-100 began 2026 at record highs: it closed at 176,355 points on 1 January 2026 and traded above 185,000 intraday in mid-January. By September 2026 it was trading around 170,000. Index levels change daily — check the PSX data portal for the current value.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy the KSE-100 index directly?

Not as a single share. You can buy an index fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) that tracks it, or build a portfolio of its largest constituents through a PSX broker.

Why is the KSE-100 measured in points?

An index is a number that started from a base value; points show how far total free-float value has moved since then. A 1,000-point move at 170,000 is about a 0.6% change.

Is the KSE-100 Shariah compliant?

No — it includes conventional banks and other non-compliant companies. Islamic investors use the KMI-30 or KMI All Share Index instead.

When is the PSX open?

Regular trading runs Monday to Friday during Pakistan business hours, with a shorter session on Friday. Check PSX for current timings and holidays.
