Should I invest in mutual funds or buy PSX shares directly?

Last reviewed:

Short answer

Mutual funds pool many investors' money and a licensed asset manager invests it, so you get diversification and professional management for a fee. Buying PSX shares directly gives you full control and no management fee, but you must research, diversify and monitor yourself. For most beginners, a fund — or a mix of funds and a few shares — is the easier start.

Types of mutual funds in Pakistan

Islamic mutual funds crossed Rs 2 trillion in assets for the first time in early 2026, according to MUFAP data, close to the size of conventional funds.

  • Money market funds: invest in T-bills and bank placements; low risk, returns close to interest rates.
  • Income funds: government and corporate debt; slightly higher risk and return.
  • Equity funds: PSX shares; highest long-term potential and the biggest swings.
  • Balanced and asset-allocation funds: a mix of shares and debt.
  • Islamic versions of each, plus Voluntary Pension Schemes (VPS) that offer a tax credit on contributions.

How funds are taxed

Fund dividends are taxed at 15% on the equity-derived part and 25% on the debt-derived part for individuals, with higher rates for non-filers. Gains on redeeming units are taxed under the securities capital-gains regime and withheld by the fund. Contributions to an approved pension fund (VPS) can reduce your income tax through a tax credit.

Who should choose what

  • Choose funds if you lack time to research, have a small amount, or want automatic diversification and purification.
  • Choose direct shares if you enjoy analysing companies, can hold 8–15 shares across sectors, and want to avoid annual fees.
  • Combine both: an equity or Islamic equity fund as the core, a few chosen shares around it.

How to start with a fund

  1. Pick an SECP-licensed asset management company; MUFAP publishes every fund's returns.
  2. Compare the fund's category, 3- and 5-year returns, expense ratio and any load.
  3. Open an account online with your CNIC and bank account and complete risk profiling.
  4. Invest a lump sum or set up a monthly systematic investment plan.

Roman Urdu mein jawab

Mutual fund behtar hai ya PSX shares?

Mutual fund mein bohat logon ka paisa jama karke licensed manager invest karta hai — diversification aur professional management fee ke badle. Khud PSX shares lene mein poora control aur koi management fee nahi, lekin research aur nigrani khud karni parti hai. Zyada tar beginners ke liye fund, ya fund aur kuch shares ka mix, asaan aaghaz hai.

Frequently asked questions

Which mutual fund gives the highest return in Pakistan?

It changes every year. Equity funds lead in rising markets and money market funds in falling ones. Look at long-term returns within the category and at costs, not last month's winner.

Are mutual funds safe?

Fund assets are held by a trustee, not the manager, and funds are SECP-regulated. Their value still rises and falls with the markets they invest in.

Are Islamic mutual funds halal?

They invest only in Shariah-screened assets under a Shariah adviser and purify non-compliant income. Most scholars accept them.

Can overseas Pakistanis invest in mutual funds?

Yes, through the Roshan Digital Account, which offers access to Pakistani mutual funds alongside shares.
