What is Colombo Stock Exchange?

The Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) is Sri Lanka's only stock exchange, regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka (SEC). Shares of Sri Lankan banks, conglomerates, manufacturers, hotels and plantation companies are listed on it.

Its two main indices are the All Share Price Index (ASPI), which covers every listed company, and the S&P Sri Lanka 20 (S&P SL20), which tracks twenty of the largest and most liquid stocks.

To buy CSE shares you open a Central Depository System (CDS) account through a licensed stockbroker; the CDS holds your shares electronically. Many listed shares trade thinly, so liquidity — how easily you can get in and out — matters as much as the chart.

Regular trading runs on weekdays (excluding Sri Lankan public holidays) from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm Sri Lanka time.
ASPI = whole market; S&P SL20 = 20 large, liquid companies.

How do I start investing in the Colombo Stock Exchange?

Choose a stockbroker licensed by the SEC, open a CDS account with them (Sri Lankan residents and foreigners can both do this), deposit funds and place orders through the broker's platform or app.

What is the difference between ASPI and S&P SL20?

ASPI is weighted across all listed companies and reflects the whole market; S&P SL20 covers twenty large, liquid companies and reflects the blue chips. They can diverge when small caps move differently from large ones.
