Gold

How does gold trading work in Pakistan?

Last reviewed:

Short answer

In Pakistan you can own gold physically (bars, coins or jewellery bought from a jeweller), trade rupee-priced gold futures on the SECP-regulated PMEX, or speculate on XAUUSD through offshore brokers, which are not regulated here. The local rate per tola follows the international price in dollars, converted at the rupee rate, plus a local premium, and is published daily by the jewellers' association.

How the Pakistan gold rate is set

One tola is 11.664 grams. The daily rate announced by the All Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association starts from the international gold price (XAU in US dollars per troy ounce of 31.1 grams), converts it into rupees at the dollar rate, scales it to a tola, and adds a local premium or discount that reflects supply, import rules and demand.

That is why the rupee gold price can rise even on a day when world gold is flat: a weaker rupee alone pushes it up. For Pakistanis, gold is partly a hedge against rupee depreciation.

What moves the price of gold

  • US interest rates and the dollar: gold usually falls when US real interest rates rise.
  • Fear and crisis: wars and market crashes push money into gold.
  • Central-bank buying, which has been a major source of demand in recent years.
  • In rupee terms, the USD/PKR exchange rate and import duties.

The Islamic rules for gold

Gold is one of the six items that, under the hadith on riba, must be exchanged hand to hand when traded for money. Buying physical gold with full payment and immediate delivery is widely accepted. Paying now for gold delivered later, or trading XAUUSD contracts where no gold changes hands, is considered impermissible by most scholars. Zakat is due on gold held above the nisab of 7.5 tola, at 2.5% of its value each lunar year.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in one tola?

One tola is 11.664 grams, so 10 grams is about 0.857 tola.

Why is the gold price in Pakistan higher than in Dubai?

The local rate includes the rupee conversion plus a premium reflecting import restrictions, duties and local demand. The gap widens when imports are tight.

Is gold a good investment in Pakistan?

Gold has protected many Pakistanis against rupee depreciation, but it pays no income and can fall for years. Most advisers suggest it as one part of savings, not all of it.

Can I trade gold online legally in Pakistan?

Yes, through a PMEX-registered broker, where rupee-priced gold futures are regulated by the SECP. Offshore XAUUSD brokers are not regulated in Pakistan.
