Scholars disagree. In June 2026 Jamia Darul Uloom Karachi, in a fatwa signed by Mufti Taqi Usmani and five other scholars, ruled that buying and selling cryptocurrencies — including Bitcoin and stablecoins such as USDT — is impermissible, mainly because they do not qualify as wealth (maal) and are dominated by speculation. Other Pakistani scholars permit spot crypto. Leveraged crypto futures face objections from almost all sides.
The fatwa, reported as dated 10 June 2026, answered a question about paying for books and an online course with cryptocurrency. It concluded that cryptocurrencies, tokens and stablecoins do not meet the Islamic definition of wealth, so buying and selling them is not permissible. Reports summarising it point to excessive uncertainty (gharar) and gambling-like speculation (maysir) as the main concerns.
The ruling is religious guidance, not law: crypto remains legal in Pakistan under the Virtual Assets Act, 2026.
Some scholars argue that a widely accepted digital asset can be treated as wealth because people value and exchange it, and that spot buying with immediate settlement and no interest can be permissible. Within days of the Darul Uloom ruling, other Pakistani clerics publicly supported digital tokens, citing an earlier edict by Mufti Waseem Akhtar Al-Madani.
PVARA's chairman met Mufti Taqi Usmani after the ruling and asked for separate Shariah assessments of stablecoins, tokenised real-world assets and other blockchain products, rather than one blanket judgement. No revised ruling had been reported by October 2026.
| Activity | Main Shariah concern | Typical view |
|---|---|---|
| Spot buying and holding | Whether crypto is wealth; speculation | Disputed — impermissible per Darul Uloom, permitted by others |
| Futures and perpetuals with leverage | Interest-like funding rates, leverage loans, no delivery | Widely held impermissible |
| Staking and lending (earn products) | Fixed yield on lent assets resembles riba | Widely held impermissible when returns are guaranteed |
| Margin trading | Borrowing with interest | Impermissible |
Because the question is genuinely disputed, take your exact activity to a mufti you trust. Mention whether you hold or trade, whether leverage is involved, and which coins — those details change the answer.
Ulama mein ikhtilaf hai. June 2026 mein Darul Uloom Karachi (Mufti Taqi Usmani samet) ne fatwa diya ke Bitcoin aur USDT samet crypto ki khareed-o-farokht na-jaiz hai. Kuch dusre ulama spot crypto ko jaiz kehte hain. Leverage wali futures trading ko taqreeban sab na-jaiz kehte hain.
The June 2026 Darul Uloom Karachi fatwa, signed by Mufti Taqi Usmani, holds that buying and selling cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin is impermissible in their current form.
The Darul Uloom fatwa explicitly covers stablecoins such as USDT. Scholars who permit crypto generally treat a dollar-backed stablecoin like holding dollars, provided it is exchanged on the spot.
Leveraged futures and perpetual contracts involve borrowed funds, funding payments and no delivery, so almost all scholars, including those who permit spot crypto, consider them impermissible.
Scholars who treat crypto as wealth say zakat is due on its market value if you hold it as an investment and meet the nisab. Ask a scholar how your holdings should be valued.
