How do I keep my crypto safe?
Last reviewed:
Short answer
Keep only trading amounts on exchanges and long-term holdings in a wallet you control. Write your seed phrase on paper, store it offline in a safe place and never type it into a website or share it — anyone with it owns your coins. Use app-based two-factor authentication, not SMS, bookmark official sites, and test every withdrawal with a small amount first.
Where your crypto can live
| Option | Who controls the keys | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Exchange account | The exchange | Account freeze, hack or exchange failure |
| Mobile/desktop wallet | You | Malware, phone loss, phishing |
| Hardware wallet | You (keys offline) | Losing the device and the seed phrase |
| Paper/metal seed backup | You | Fire, theft, someone finding it |
The seed phrase rule
A self-custody wallet is restored from a 12- or 24-word seed phrase. Whoever has those words controls the funds — no company can reverse a theft. Write it down on paper or metal, keep copies in two secure places, and never photograph it, store it in WhatsApp, email or cloud notes, or enter it on a website. No legitimate support agent will ever ask for it.
Scams aimed at Pakistani crypto users
- Fake exchange or wallet apps and lookalike websites spread through ads and Telegram.
- "Support" accounts on social media asking for your seed phrase or remote access.
- SIM-swap fraud: criminals take over your mobile number to receive SMS codes — use authenticator apps instead.
- Fake airdrops and token approvals that drain your wallet when you sign.
- P2P buyers sending fake payment screenshots; check your actual bank balance.
Security checklist
- Enable app-based 2FA (Google Authenticator or similar) on every exchange.
- Set a strong, unique password and an anti-phishing code if the exchange offers one.
- Turn on withdrawal address whitelisting.
- Bookmark official sites; never log in through links in messages.
- Send a small test transaction before any large transfer, and double-check the network.
- Review and revoke old token approvals in your wallet.
- Keep your phone's operating system and wallet apps updated.
If something goes wrong
If your exchange account is compromised, contact the exchange through its official app immediately and change passwords. If a self-custody wallet's seed is exposed, move the remaining funds to a new wallet with a new seed at once. Report fraud to your bank (for P2P payments) and to the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency, and ignore paid "recovery" services, which are usually scams themselves.
Roman Urdu mein jawab
Crypto ko mehfooz kaise rakhein?
Exchange par sirf trading ki raqam rakhein aur lambi muddat ki holding apne wallet mein. Seed phrase kaghaz par likh kar offline mehfooz jagah rakhein, kabhi kisi website par type ya kisi ko share na karein — jis ke paas seed phrase hai coins usi ke. SMS ke bajaye app wali 2FA lagayein aur har withdrawal pehle chhoti raqam se test karein.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to keep crypto on Binance or another exchange?
Exchanges add convenience but you depend on their security and solvency. Keep only what you trade there and hold long-term amounts in self-custody.
What is a hardware wallet?
A small device that keeps private keys offline and signs transactions without exposing them to your computer or phone.
Can stolen crypto be recovered?
Rarely. Transactions are irreversible; occasionally exchanges or issuers freeze funds traced to fraud if reported quickly.
Should I share my wallet address?
Your public address can be shared to receive funds. Never share your private key or seed phrase.
